This past weekend was the CrossFit Northeast Regional Qualifiers in Albany, NY. It was certainly a ton of fun and a very challenging weekend to say the least. Now before you think this post is about me, it's not. The reason for this post is to highlight the last several months leading up to the event. Although I did not finish as high as I would have liked, I worked very hard to prepare for it and proud to say that I have everything for each of the 3 grueling workouts. Part of my motivation for competing this year was showing the kids that you can make a goal for yourself, and strive hard to achieve it. Desite not qualifying for the CF Games in California in July, I still considered this each a success. I learned a lot about my own training and what I am capable of. The kids watched and supported me through and took away a lot of the same things that I did. In fact, we have several of our athletes from Steve's Club who have committed to training hard over the next year and entering next year's Qualifier. Of course I will do everything I can to help them get there.

Now that they have a good idea of what it takes to set a goal and go after it, don't be surprised if you see a a kid from Steve's Club over the next few years competing in the Games in Aromas California.

These kids now have a vision and goal in mind. Let's re-evaluate in a month from now and see where everyone is out. So stay tuned for more updates here on everyone's progress and the quest to compete in the 2010 Northeast Regional Qualifier.

After this, move on to a specific warm-up with the barbell or weighted PVC appropriate for the workout of the day.

Strict Dead hang Pullups, 3xmax

4 rounds for time:
5 KB swings - 40% BW
10 thigh touches (L+R=1)
50 m sprint (sprint to telephone pole and back)
30 sec rest

Honestly, I can't think of a better way to have spent a Saturday than Crossfitting and competing with such a wonderful group of athletes and young adults. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for welcoming Josh, Lina, and myself into your gym and allowing us to participate in what will no doubt be the first of what will become a yearly Crossfit fiesta for growing numbers of out-of-town participants. To know that you'll be stomping out hundreds, if not thousands, of box jumps on a box with our names on it is an honor not easily surpassed. In addition I would like to express my appreciation for your unending support during the competition. There's no way I would have been able to finish that last rediculously slow shoulder press without you screaming right along with me. Contrary to the supposition that I'm a "lumberjack from the Northwest," I actually sit behind a computer most of the day which does nothing to prepare the back, legs, or skin of the hands for 1000 meters of running, and 25 deadlifts, cleans, presses, and burpees. Which brings me to my last articulation of gratitude: and that would be for keeping the laughter to an inaudible minimum when I bailed on the second to last clean and fell flat on my back. I'm not sure my ego could've handled all the finger pointing and laughter that the scene no doubt warranted.

But seriously, thank you. Josh, Lina, and myself will be wearing our shirts with pride knowing first hand the strength of community and commitment that they represent.

After a great weekend and tough workout following our first annual fundraiser, the kids came in ready to tackle the world. Nothing beats a friendly competition and adrenaline filled workout event where they get to show off their skills and all the hard work they've poured into their training to get ready for it. The kids had some great times. More importantly, good form and proper technique looked good on the major lifts (deads, cleans, presses, burpees) and NOT ONE person quit. Doing the workout myself, I must admit the thought of giving up may have crossed my mind a few times during the course of the workout. Of course, we have learned by now that quitting is not an option. If there is one thing that our athletes at Steve's Club learn, that is NO ONE quits. As the saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Of course, this applies to other aspects of life. For example, when the time comes to get a job do we sit back and wait for someone to knock on the front door with the perfect job opportunity?  Of course not. Instead, you have to work harder than the next guy and work your butt off to land the position or dream job that you want. Perhaps you get rejected the first 5 times from the college of your choice or that perfect job. Does that mean its time to quit and give up and lower your standards going back to hanging on the corner smoking weed and just not caring. NO! The tough workouts teach us to fight. Fight for more. Fight for the best you can give. Not sometimes, but all the time.

What a spectacular day!  Thank you so much to all the participates, spectators and volunteers for making our first annual fundraiser a very special and memorable day for everyone involved. Also a big thank you to CrossFit Flood, CrossFit Invictus, CrossFit Flood, CrossFit South Brooklyn, The Ron Jaworski Family, United Way of Camden County, Jason/Josh, and the many other individuals that generousily donated to the cause. This is real change my friends.  Thanks for allowing the opportunity to make Steve's Club a place for the kids to "get away from it all" and experience the community and teaching methods of the greatest fitness program on earth...CrossFit.
